The Engadin
A paragliding paradise for connoisseurs

The Engadin, especially the Upper Engadine is certainly one of the most beautiful valleys in the world. Its numerous lakes appear in surreal blue to turquoise in summer. High-altitude coniferous forests characterize the valley, while higher up you will find lush alpine meadows with diverse flora and fauna. At even higher altitudes, rugged rocky landscapes and unique glacier worlds await you. In autumn the whole valley shines in golden yellow and brown hues, before it turns into a fairy-tale snowy landscape in winter. The meadows and forests are cultivated and protected (nature and wildlife conservation). Wild and untouched appear the higher mountain worlds. Already the valley is situated at about 1800 meters above sea level, some of our launch sites are among the highest in Europe.
The Engadin and its high mountains reward pilots and alpinists with unforgettable views - you literally feel "close to heaven".

The flight area and our training offer is strongly seasonal. In winter frozen lakes can be used, in autumn the decreasing Maloja wind. In spring it is important to avoid uncut meadows. Nature and game reserves must be respected, as well as traditional hunting in autumn.

In July and August, flying conditions are usually too challenging for student pilots. We switch to nearby valleys or offer flight safaris to other areas.

The high summer and the low winter, however, are the time of the tandem flights for us flight instructors, the flight school operation is then reduced. The cable cars do not operate all year round, but we do Hike & Fly and flights in Puschlav, where the cable cars are at our disposal all year round. The easiest time to start your pilot training is March to June or September to October.

The area between Maloja and Zernez is avoided by many pilots, and is generally considered a very demanding flying area. Often the Maloja wind blows with more than 40 km/h. The valley winds of all side valleys interfere, pressure differences strongly affect the balance of the wind systems.

The high altitude favors rapid weather changes and strong to very strong thermals, not only in summer. Mountain and glacier winds can suddenly blow in and make landing difficult. What looks like a calm evening flight can quickly turn into an unintended SIV. In addition to Samaden airfield and transport helicopter traffic, there are many protected areas and local rules to follow.

Often you fly here close to the limit of what is feasible with the paraglider. Safe flying here needs a lot of local know-how!
